A funny anecdote during a performance of Symphony Nr. 45 (1772) – better known as “The Farewell Symphony“.
Count Nikolaus, Ist, wanted to stay longer than planned in Castle Esterház that nowadays is located in Hungary. The young musicians who left their wifes back in Eisenstadt did not, though. So they’ve asked Papa Haydn for help.
Jo got the idea to write a symphony in which one instrument after the other would stop playing.
At the end of the performance, each musician, after his part has ended, extinguished his light, collected his notes and left the room with his instrument.
The count understood the veiled reference and they’ve returned to Eisenstadt the next day.
