Question 12
Jo and music
Jo loved animals, as you may have noticed by now! Therefore people were naming some of Jo´s symphonies and string quartets after animals. For example symphony Nr. 82 “The Bear” and symphony 83 “The Chicken”. Some string quartets were named as follows “Lark Quartet”, “Bird Quartet”, “Equestrian Quartet” and the “Frog Quartet”, Nr. 41 D-Major. The croaking of the frogs in the fourth movement is done by the so called bariolage-technique where you play a note on an open string on a violin, then the same note on the next string, and repeat that quickly.
Same pitch, different tone. The open string doesn’t vibrate, the other one does. With a bit of imagination it does sound like the croaking of frogs – voila!
