The Jewish community

The first documents of jewish settlers in Eisenstadt date back to 1296. WOW, they’ve been here for a long time! In 1732, Jo’s birth year, the jewish district formed their own commune “Unterberg Eisenstadt”.

In 1871 the community grow big enough to receive its own mayor and bailiff!

You can visit the jewish museum but also the shabbat chain, which was used to lock the commune in order to keep noise down on the day of rest. There are 2 jewish graveyards nearby, which are worth a visit!

The most prominent jewish family in Eisenstadt was the winetrader family Wolf. Alexander (Sandor) Wolf was an important art collector. You can see his collection in the country’s museum (Landesmuseum).
